- Network providers sometimes activate SIM locks in the mobile phones they sell. A SIM lock is a small locking program that restricts the use of a mobile phone to the SIM card of the network provider.
- There are several types of SIM locks. The most restrictive only allows you to use a single, specific SIM card for a mobile phone. In Switzerland, restriction to a single network provider is common.
Orange SIM locks
Mobile phones concerned
There are two types of mobile phones with SIM lock:
- all mobile phones with PrePay SIM cards sold after 30.09.2001.
- exclusive Orange models sold with a subscription, for example iPhone and Signature phones.
unlock procedure
Send your request along with your name, your Orange account number, your mobile phone number and the IMEI number of your mobile phone to info@orange.ch.
a) PrePay: PrePay mobile phones are locked for 24 months. This means they will only accept Orange SIM cards for the first 24 months after you make your first call on them.
b) Subscriptions: Mobile phones are locked for 12 or 24 months, depending on the term of contract (for all new subscriptions and contract extensions).
The following exceptions apply to policies a) and b):
- If you have signed up or renewed your Orange contract more than six months ago, you can request SIM unlock for your mobile phone for a fee of CHF 100.–.
- Once you have confirmed your contract extension (which you can do several months before its expiration), you can request SIM unlock for your old mobile phone for free.
- If you bought a mobile phone for its full price (without the price reduction you receive with a subscription or the price of the PrePay pack), you can request SIM unlock for your mobile phone for free.
- If you paid a penalty for early cancellation, you can request SIM unlock for your mobile phone for free.
- Unlocking is free for mobile number portability customers.
- If you want to keep a mobile phone that was locked by Swisscom or Sunrise, you must contact your previous provider to request SIM unlock. Orange does not have the codes necessary to unlock mobile phones purchased from other network providers.
- If you request mobile number portability and receive a mobile phone locked by Orange, we can unlock the phone for free if you want to use your new Orange mobile phone with the SIM card of your former network provider while waiting for the number transfer.
Note:
c) These terms and conditions also apply to other SIM cards designed for use with locked mobile phones on the
Orange network
(CoopMobile, mobilezone.net, Twin Card).
d) If a customer illegally unlocks a locked mobile phone, the warranty of the provider is void.
For SIM unlock, you must have purchased the mobile phone from Orange Switzerland.
if you purchased your mobile phone without a subscription:
- You can get a SIM unlock immediately and for free. All you have to do is send the proof of purchase by email to info@orange.ch. Send your request along with your name, your Orange account number, your mobile phone number and the IMEI number of your mobile phone and a scan of your sales receipt, with your IMEI number visible on the receipt.
- Within two weeks, you will receive the code and instructions on how to unlock your mobile phone.
- If you have an iPhone, it will be unlocked 24 hours after processing your email. Once your phone is unlocked or the status of the SIM card set, a message is displayed on the screen indicating the status of the operation and the result. You will receive an SMS message confirming that your iPhone has been unlocked. Once your request has been confirmed, connect your iPhone to iTunes within 24 to 48 hours in order to complete the operation.
